Reading counts at Kendrick High School. The circulation statistics comparing high schools consistently show that Kendrick has the busiest high school library in Muscogee County. This is due, in large part, to the fact that at Kendrick students in subjects across the curriculum are required to read books from the Reading Counts collection.
Reading Counts books are well reviewed, carefully selected books including classics, young adult fiction and a wide range of non-fiction books covering an extensive variety of subjects. The unique thing about RC books is that each book has a computerized test to go along with it. This enables teachers to better keep track of student accomplishments in reading, because each time a student reads a book, he also takes a computerized test on the book.
Test scores show that the Reading Counts program is really making a difference in the achievement level of our students and we certainly will continue its use. Keeping the library adequately supplied with current books for the RC program requires money. Unfortunately, the budget for library materials has been cut repeatedly by the state over the last several years, so that we now have only about one quarter of the funds that we had five or six years ago.
The librarians, Mrs. McMahon and Mrs. Chambless, have had various fundraisers to try to make up some of the difference in funds. One on-going project the library participates in is the Cartridges for Kids program. This program pays cash for some items most of us would consider trash. Specifically, they pay the library for:
